Artist's Comments

This is a drawing of Spider, a man I spent a lot of time with on my recent trip to Mornington Island, Australia. He's the oldest man on the island and one of the 6 or 7 remaining speakers of his quickly-dying language. As a linguistics graduate student, I was there with one of my professors helping Spider's tribe, the Lardil, to document and hopefully save their language from extinction.

The photo I used as a reference can be found at [link] -- it's my photo, as well. More info on Spider is available at that link, too.

Black, white, brown, and grey Conte on brown Strathmore paper.

Comments and suggestions are, as always, greatly appreciated! Please add this to your favorites +fav if you think it's deserving. Also, please let me know if you think I should do anything with the background.

Old Spider Freehand by withani was suggested to me by my good friend, nieman. He proposed to feature this to draw attention to the cultural art here on deviantART. I agreed completely which is why I'm showing you this amazing piece with a wonderful and touching story to back it up. (Selected by $matteo) (Featured by °matteo)

Holy poopsticks..

Yea, I think it's definitely deserving of a fav...

You captured it perfectly... the shine of his skin, the leathery texture, the rough wrinkles, the eyes and the lines around them, the highlights and shadows are done just perfectly.
Even the hair is done great.. I always at hair, regardless of what I use..

The shape, the chin, it's all just so perfect and realistic.. you did an excellent job recreating him. I can see just as much of a story in this, as I can the photo itself, so this is just done marvelously... +fav of course..
:iconnutdot:
This is a brilliant portrait, his face just seems to be sunk into the paper.

Very good use of the media. I think this makes it as my first fav.

Your talents are mature and diverse. Incredible.

*thinks about what he's seen from you* poetry, freehand drawing, photography, and logical discourse in the forums... and all of this from a linguistics student? Amazing. Let me know when you cure that pesky cancer.

High points of this for me are the reflections on his forehead and nose, and the explosive hair all around his head. When I saw your pictures of him in the gallery, I was thinking of asking you for permission to draw him, but you've beaten me to the punch... and done a much better job than I would have anyway.

+fav for sure.

Bullet; Green Excellent work--the detail through shading, lighting, and color makes for a wonderful impression on the skin and hair. I particularly love the areas where stray strands fall across the face.

Bullet; Green I like the background as it is. Unfortunately I don't know enough to consider myself knowledgeable on the culture at hand, but (out of possible ignorance) the background to me seems fitting with the culture. There is something natural about it in a metamorphic sense that seems fitting with the character and his representations. I personally would leave it.

Bullet; Green The little +fav trick worked on me too--out goes a picture of Alison to a picture of Spider. =p (Razz)

your work in linguistics sounds cool. I hope you really really like it

woww nice.... ck ck ck ck...

This is great! There is tremendous character in this portrait and I think the background should be left as is.

Too bad his hair ran off the top edge of the page a bit. Things like that bother me but that is probably my problem.
